What to do at security
To reduce the time spent at security, we would suggest that you be prepared before reaching the metal detector and follow the instructions shown on the screens, by taking off everything that if detected, could require a more thorough check of you and your luggage. Put the following articles in the trays provided at security: electrical/electronic items, jackets, coats, metal objects, watches, wallets, purses, keys, belts, buckles, etc. Remember that it is not permitted to wear or carry in your hand luggage objects that can be used as weapons (metal files, scissors, golf clubs, etc.), explosives or flammable, poisonous, toxic and infectious substances. A list of objects not allowed on board is displayed at the check-in desk.
Safety regulations: what liquids/fluids is it possible to take on-board?
The current European regulations limit—but do not prohibit—the transport of liquids in hand luggage (such as perfumes, creams, shaving foam, cosmetics, toothpaste, etc.).
The rules set out by the EU regulation are non-negotiable, and therefore security personnel are required to enforce them strictly.
Thanks to the new-generation EDS C3 scanners in use at the security checkpoints of Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 at Fiumicino Airport—serving all departing flights except those bound for the USA or Israel—and in compliance with European Commission directives, the transport of liquids in hand luggage is permitted in containers with a capacity of up to 2 liters.
During security screening, only liquid containers of up to 2L are allowed in hand luggage without needing to separate them or place them in plastic bags.
Liquid containers larger than 2L may be transported in hand luggage only if empty; otherwise, they must be checked in with hold luggage at the check-in counter.
Thanks again to the EDS C3 scanners, electronic and electrical devices (laptops, tablets, etc.) may also remain inside hand luggage during security checks.
Security screening procedures remain unchanged at the airport checkpoints dedicated to flights bound for the USA or Israel, where traditional X-ray machines are used. In these cases, liquids must be separated from hand luggage, placed in transparent plastic bags (maximum container size of 100 ml, up to a total of 1 liter), and electronic devices must also be removed.
Exceptions to the restrictions apply to LAGs (Liquids, Aerosols, and Gels) required during the trip for medical purposes or special dietary needs, including baby food. These may be brought in hand luggage, provided they are separated and undergo dedicated security screening.
Once past the security checkpoints, there are no restrictions on liquid purchases: airport shops provide sealed bags for transport all the way to boarding.
What items are prohibited?
It is forbidden to carry on board potentially dangerous items (e.g. scissors, knives, files, metal-tipped umbrellas).
It is forbidden to carry any type of gun or bladed weapon, explosives and ammunition in your luggage, unless they are accompanied by a permit issued by the competent authorities.
For further information please see the ENAC Regulations.
What are the customs limits for purchases at the airport?
