Towards Zero-Emission Airports
Aeroporti di Roma, with the co-funding of the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme, has launched the eGO at FCO-CIA project to support the transition towards sustainable and zero-emission airport operations at Rome’s two airports: Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA).
Project Objective
The project aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by developing an advanced electric power and charging infrastructure to support ground operations. This ecological transition involves both the core airport of Fiumicino and the comprehensive airport of Ciampino, both key nodes in the TEN-T network and the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor.
What the Project Involves
- Installation of 425 electric charging points for operational vehicles in airside areas:
- 398 at Fiumicino (FCO)
- 27 at Ciampino (CIA)
- Modernisation and upgrading of airport electrical infrastructure to ensure the capacity required to support the entire fleet of electric vehicles.
- Creation of a comprehensive electric supply network to facilitate zero-emission ground operations by airport handlers.
Works at Ciampino (CIA)
- 27 charging points installed across two airside areas:
- Area A: 12 stations up to 22kW with interchangeable sockets (32A three-phase, 32A and 16A single-phase).
- Area B: 15 stations (9 up to 22kW, 6 up to 44kW) with versatile charging configurations.
- Construction of modular canopies, precast technical spaces, and infrastructure adaptations.
- Refurbishment of the C8 electrical cabin to ensure the required power without impacting other users on the network.

Works at Fiumicino (FCO)
- 398 charging points planned, distributed across multiple airside areas with power levels of 7.5kW, 22kW, and 70kW, to serve various airport vehicles (buses, stairs, conveyors, GPUs, pushbacks). Deployment scheduled between 2025 and 2026.
- Power grid upgrades:
- Expansion of the Medium Voltage (MV) rings A1 and A4.
- Modernisation of HV/MV substations, including installation of new transformers.
- Upgrading distribution panels and laying new ducts and civil infrastructure.

A Climate-Oriented Project
eGO at FCO-CIA represents a tangible step towards the climate neutrality of airports, contributing to:
- The electrification of airport operations, reducing the use of fossil fuels.
- The achievement of the European Green Deal goals, in line with COM(2019) 640 by the European Commission.
EU Co-Funded by the European Union
The project is co-funded by the European Union under the CEF – Transport – Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), supporting the development of sustainable infrastructure in Europe’s strategic transport sectors, with a contribution of €1,939,775.00.
