Immigrations and customs

Starting from October 20, 2025, the new European Entry/Exit System (EES)  is now operational at Rome Ciampino Airport.

The EES records crossings of the external borders of 29 Schengen countries. The system applies exclusively to third-country nationals entering the Schengen area for short stays (up to 90 days within any 180-day period), recording – in full compliance with EU privacy regulations – transit dates, biometric data and travel documents. Thanks to the EES, border checks are becoming more secure, with progressive access to self-service kiosks for travellers holding a biometric passport and aged over 12. An online portal allows users to check the remaining days of their permitted stay.

The system helps reduce irregular stays and strengthens the protection of common borders. It does not apply to EU/CH/EEA citizens, to holders of long-term residence permits, or to other exempt categories, such as citizens of Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City. In addition to Italy, other European countries introducing the EES will be: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

With the EES, travelling is more secure and reliable.
